Science Café 2026: (Session 3) The Rising Tide: Obesity, Diabetes & Metabolic Diseases

Msheireb Museums, in collaboration with Sidra Medicine, hosted the third symposium in the Science Café series, titled “Rising Tide: Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases”, at Bin Jalmoud House, with the aim of highlighting the latest scientific and medical developments related to the prevention and early intervention of these diseases, and to raise community awareness of the importance of adopting healthy and sustainable lifestyles. The seminar was attended by a group of doctors, researchers, and specialists in the fields of endocrinology, diabetes, nutrition, and public health, where participants discussed the most prominent challenges related to metabolic health, factors related to daily lifestyles, in addition to recent developments in medical treatments, digital technologies, precision medicine, and their role in improving healthcare outcomes.
Speakers included Dr. Amira Aqeel, Principal Investigator at Sidra Medicine, Dr. Tariq Choucair, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetes at the National Institute of Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolism and Endocrinologist at Sidra Medicine, Dr. Huda Yassin Azzam, Consultant Endocrinologist at Sidra Medicine, Dr. Al-Tayeb Abdulaziz, Consultant Diabetes and Endocrinologist at The View, Ms. Reem bint Abdulrahman Al-Muftah, Director of WHOOP Labs, and Ms. Ghenwa Zubair, Clinical Dietitian at The View. During the session, participants stressed the importance of adopting an integrated preventive approach to confront the increasing rates of obesity, diabetes and metabolic diseases, stressing the role of health awareness, proper nutrition and physical activity in reducing health risks and improving the quality of life. Mr. Mohammed Al Yousef, Director of Operations at Msheireb Museums, said: “Through our partnership with Sidra Medicine, the Science Café series continues to highlight the importance of employing culture, education and science to address issues that directly affect the lives of the community. He added that Msheireb Museums is keen to provide spaces for meaningful dialogue and continuous learning, allowing experts and the public to exchange knowledge on key societal issues, noting that hosting discussions on obesity, metabolic health and public health contributes to raising awareness, encouraging informed dialogues and building a healthier and more connected society.
Dr. Sahar Daas, Director of Research at Sidra Medicine and founder of the Science Café initiative, expressed her pride in the progress the series has made over the past three years, stressing that it has become a trusted platform for the exchange of scientific knowledge and insights between experts and various segments of society.
She explained that the last session focused on the profound impact of healthy lifestyles, the importance of prevention, and the role of precision medicine in dealing with obesity, diabetes and metabolic diseases, noting that the initiative represents an effective model of community partnership aimed at unifying efforts to face growing health challenges.
